Fate War beginner's guide: the first 30 days
How marches, troops and heroes work, which heroes to build first, what to upgrade, and the spending habits that separate fast accounts from slow ones.

How Fate War works
Fate War is a Norse-mythology strategy MMO by IGG. You rebuild a kingdom around your Chieftain Hall, train four troop types, and send them out in marches led by two heroes, a commander and a lieutenant. Both heroes' skills apply to the march, so the game is mostly about choosing pairs whose skills multiply each other.
Your account grows through four things that should run all the time:
- Construction, which uses your two build slots.
- Research in the Shrine.
- Training, with one barracks per troop type.
- Gathering on the world map.
Every idle queue is lost progress. The habit that matters most is checking all four each time you log in.
Your first 30 days
- Follow the chapter quests and keep every queue busy. Quests are the fastest early progress. Alongside them, keep construction (two slots), Shrine research, all four barracks and your gathering marches working at all times.
- Join an active tribe and move next to it. Tribe help shortens every timer, rallies unlock targets you cannot beat alone, and tribe events such as Sea Conquest and Primordial Deposits are the main source of hero equipment.
- Clear your territories. Your kingdom has 33 fogged territories with resources, Witch Huts, chests and rescued soldiers. Clearing them early is free progress.
- Upgrade everything to the cap, then the Chieftain Hall. The Chieftain Hall caps every other building. Bring the rest up first; that also clears most Hall requirements. Chieftain Hall 8 opens Tribal Showdown.
- Build one hero pair per troop type. Every march has a commander and a lieutenant, and both heroes' skills apply. Good targets: Odysseus + Kalthas (Axe Throwers), Wukong + Aska (Cavalry), Karl + Petra (Berserkers), Freyja + Vista (Beast Riders).
- Prioritise stars over levels. Hero skills 2, 3 and 4 unlock at 2, 3 and 4 stars, and maxing every skill awakens the hero and unlocks skill 5.
- Spend stamina and speed-ups on scoring themes. Call to Arms and Tribal Showdown score different actions. Stamina scored 50 Call to Arms points on every theme recorded, so never let it sit at 1,500.
- Claim everything every day. Taxes (up to 96 collections a day with Tax Agreements), mail, tribe gifts, free calls in the Miracle Hut, milestone chests, and your daily attempts in Arena of Legends, Ancestral Trial, Jotun Invasion, Treasure Trail and Trade.
The four troop types
| Troop type | Role | Best pair |
|---|---|---|
| Berserkers | Berserkers trade blows at the front. Their heroes lean on shields, counterattacks and HP Reduction: Karl's Burst cuts the target's HP by 25%, which Petra's Blood Resonance and Ganglot's summons both exploit. | Reid + Kalthas |
| Axe Throwers | Axe Throwers deal ranged burst and carry the strongest DEF-ignore in the game. Odysseus makes a troop of only Axe Throwers ignore 50% of the target's DEF, and Kalthas and Roro cut DEF further. | Odysseus + Joan |
| Cavalry | Cavalry move fast and hit hard. Aska adds up to +35% Cavalry ATK, Selena +25% ATK and +30% damage to Blackforged, and Wukong up to +35% Cavalry HP with a 60% chance to ignore debuffs. | Wukong + Aska |
| Beast Riders | Beast Riders are tough mounted troops. Only one Beast Rider march can be out at a time, and tier V Raptor Riders need a Legendary Beast Saddle per soldier. Freyja reflects damage and cuts healing, Iris heals and buffs pure Beast Rider troops. | Freyja + Vista |
Many hero skills only work for one troop type, or only when the whole troop is one type. That is why you pick heroes per troop type rather than "the best heroes" in general. The combat mechanics guide explains the rules.
Which heroes to build first
Build pairs, not single heroes. These are the strongest pair per troop type at max level:
Axe Throwers
Joan's Saint's Resolve adds 35% to Odysseus's Burst, and Armor Piercer ignores 50% DEF when he leads only Axe Throwers. Model score 100/100.
Cavalry
+35% Cavalry HP from Wukong and +35% Cavalry ATK from Aska, plus clones, Guards and debuff resistance. Model score 95/100.
Berserkers
Reid's +30% Berserker HP and ATK shred keep the troop alive; Kalthas's DEF shred works in any troop type. Model score 91/100.
Beast Riders
Freyja reflects damage and cuts healing; Vista boosts her Burst and shields the opening seconds. Model score 68/100.
You won't own all of these on day one. While you collect them:
- Use Vista or Aelfwine as a stand-in lieutenant; Balanced heroes fit any troop.
- Spend hero calls on the heroes you are starring, because stars unlock skills. Skills 2, 3 and 4 open at 2, 3 and 4 stars, and maxing every skill awakens a hero and unlocks skill 5.
- Skip investing in Elena, Sigrid and Skerne for combat. They are gathering heroes.
What to upgrade
The Chieftain Hall caps every other building. Bring your other buildings to the current cap, which also clears most Hall requirements, then upgrade the Hall. Chieftain Hall 8 opens Tribal Showdown and Realm Between Realms.
Behind the Hall, keep the Shrine researching at all times. Its Economic, Military and Tribal Showdown trees give permanent bonuses and unlock troop tiers. Feed it Knowledge from your Scholar Circles. The building guide covers every building and the order to upgrade them.
Resources and stamina
- Gathering: food, lumber, stone and iron come from your nodes and from gathering on the map. Early on, food and lumber matter most. Later projects need far more stone and iron (Shrine 30 alone costs about 121 million of each), so gather what you are short of.
- Plunder risk: resources sitting in your kingdom can be plundered, so spend them rather than hoarding.
- Stamina: it caps at 1,500 and is spent on Blackforged (50 per march), Draug and other world targets. Never let it sit at the cap.
Events: spend on the day that scores
Two events run almost all the time. Call to Arms matches you with players at your Chieftain Hall level and scores a theme that changes through the day. Tribal Showdown pits your tribe against another tribe with a daily theme. Read both panels before spending stamina, speed-ups or hero items.
Examples recorded in game:
| Call to Arms theme | What scores |
|---|---|
| Research | Research speed-ups 4 points per minute; +10 research might 7 points; stamina 50 per point |
| Upgrade Hero | Special Calling 1,500 points; 1,000 hero EXP from Treatises 1 point; stamina 50 per point |
Register your tribe for Sea Conquest and Primordial Deposits as soon as registration opens; they are the main source of hero equipment.
Common beginner mistakes
- Spreading EXP and skill materials across many heroes instead of four core pairs.
- Putting a troop-type hero in the wrong troop, for example Aska with Berserkers, so their main bonus does nothing.
- Mixing troop types under Odysseus, which switches off his 50% DEF ignore.
- Letting stamina sit at 1,500 or using speed-ups when no event scores them.
- Leaving a queue idle overnight.
- Staying in an inactive tribe and missing tribe help, rallies and equipment events.
Questions players ask
What should I do first in Fate War?
Follow the chapter quests, join an active tribe, clear your fogged territories, and keep construction, Shrine research, all four barracks and gathering busy. Upgrade other buildings to the cap before each Chieftain Hall upgrade.
Which heroes should a beginner level first?
When should I spend stamina?
When Call to Arms or Tribal Showdown scores it. Stamina was worth 50 Call to Arms points on every theme recorded, so the main rule is never to let it sit at the 1,500 cap.
Is Baldur worth levelling?
He is your free starting hero and carries the early story. Long term he is a hunting specialist: strong on Blackforged, weaker in straight PvP. Don't pour rare items into him.
